It seems as though several drivers neglect to strip the Ethernet CRC,
which will cause the FCoE footer to be misplaced and result
(coincidentally) in an "invalid CRC" error from FCoE.
Add a human-visible message indicating this, to aid in diagnosis.

Errors generated by the network layer in response to received packets
are liable to be lost, since nothing systematically records these
errors and often the packets do not propagate far enough through the
stack to impact upon user-visible processes.
Improve this situation by recording network-layer errors in the
network device statistics.

The block device interface used in gPXE predates the invention of even
the old gPXE data-transfer interface, let alone the current iPXE
generic asynchronous interface mechanism. Bring this old code up to
date, with the following benefits:
o Block device commands can be cancelled by the requestor. The INT 13
layer uses this to provide a global timeout on all INT 13 calls,
with the result that an unexpected passive failure mode (such as
an iSCSI target ACKing the request but never sending a response)
will lead to a timeout that gets reported back to the INT 13 user,
rather than simply freezing the system.
o INT 13,00 (reset drive) is now able to reset the underlying block
device. INT 13 users, such as DOS, that use INT 13,00 as a method
for error recovery now have a chance of recovering.
o All block device commands are tagged, with a numerical tag that
will show up in debugging output and in packet captures; this will
allow easier interpretation of bug reports that include both
sources of information.
o The extremely ugly hacks used to generate the boot firmware tables
have been eradicated and replaced with a generic acpi_describe()
method (exploiting the ability of iPXE interfaces to pass through
methods to an underlying interface). The ACPI tables are now
built in a shared data block within .bss16, rather than each
requiring dedicated space in .data16.
o The architecture-independent concept of a SAN device has been
exposed to the iPXE core through the sanboot API, which provides
calls to hook, unhook, boot, and describe SAN devices. This
allows for much more flexible usage patterns (such as hooking an
empty SAN device and then running an OS installer via TFTP).

Doorbell records are currently embedded within the completion queue
and receive work queue strucures, which are allocated using zalloc()
and so have an alignment guarantee of only sizeof(void*), i.e. four
bytes. This is sufficient for the receive work queue, but not for the
completion queue, which requires an alignment guarantee of eight
bytes.
Though not guaranteed, it so happens that zalloc() will always return
a pointer that is exactly four bytes above a sixteen-byte boundary.
The completion queue doorbell record is therefore always misaligned,
and the value passed to the hardware via SW2HW_CQ is actually always
pointing to the page_offset value within the MTT descriptor (which
directly precedes the inline doorbell record). Provided that the page
offset is greater than 0x100, this looks to the hardware like an
update_ci value of greater than 0x010000 (taking into account
endianness differences), and so the hardware will happily deliver more
than 0x010000 completions before stopping. Hence this problem is
rarely observable.
Fix by allocating the doorbell records separately and using the
correct alignment constraints.

Add hermon_dump_cqctx() for dumping a completion queue context, and
hermon_fill_nop_send_wqe() for inserting NOPs into send work queues.

DBG_ENABLE() and DBG_DISABLE() are currently constrained to enabling
and disabling only debug levels that are compiled in for the current
object. For example, a DBG_ENABLE(DBGLVL_EXTRA) in foo.c will not be
able to affect output from other objects at DBGLVL_EXTRA unless foo.c
is itself compiled with DBGLVL_EXTRA enabled.
Partially fix by removing this unnecessary constraint. (Note that it
is still necessary for at least one debug level to be compiled in for
the object invoking DBG_ENABLE()/DBG_DISABLE().)

An attempt to transmit a packet of 8192 bytes or larger will collide
with the status bits in the TX descriptor. This gives the appearance
of the network card's transmit data path having just suddenly stopped
responding; iPXE is waiting for the card to report a TX completion
but, because of the status bit collision, the card thinks that the
descriptor has not yet been written.
Fix by explicitly checking for oversized packets in rtl_transmit().
Discovered during Fibre Channel over Ethernet testing, and debugged by
using gdb to examine the state of the emulated rtl8139 card in qemu.

xfer_window_changed() can be used to notify peers that an interface is
now ready to accept data. This can potentially be used to eliminate
the need for wasteful processes that simply poll xfer_window() until

The rtl8139 driver includes the Ethernet CRC within the received
packet. All current protocols ignore trailing garbage, but FCoE
requires the frame length to be correct (since the FCoE footer
position is calculated from the end of the packet), so fix the driver
to strip out the CRC.

iPXE has never supported SEEK_END; the usage of "whence" offers only
the options of SEEK_SET and SEEK_CUR and so is effectively a boolean
flag. Further flags will be required to support additional metadata
required by the Fibre Channel network model, so repurpose the "whence"
field as a generic "flags" field.
xfer_seek() has always been used with SEEK_SET, so remove the "whence"
field altogether from its argument list.

Even with the noinline specifier added by commit 1a260f8, gcc may skip
calls to non-inlinable functions that it knows have no side
effects. This caused the get_cached_dhcpack() call in start_dhcp(),
the weak stub of which has no code in its body, to be removed,
preventing cached DHCP from working.
Fix by adding a __keepme macro to compiler.h expanding to asm(""), as
recommended by gcc's info page, and using it in the weak stub for
get_cached_dhcpack().

Add user access API for linux.
On linux userspace virtual == user == phys addresses. Physical
addresses also being the same is wrong, but there is no general way of
converting userspace addresses to physical as what appears to be
contiguous in userspace is physically fragmented. Currently only the
DMA memory is special-cased, but its conversion to bus addresses is
done in phys_to_bus. This is known to break virtio as it is passing
phys addresses to the virtual device.

When building multiple targets per BIN with multiple jobs, for
example:
make -j16 bin-i386-efi/ipxe.efi{,drv,rom} bin-x86_64-efi/ipxe.efi{,drv,rom}
we would invoke a make subprocess for each goal in parallel resulting
in multiple makes running in a single BIN directory. Fix by grouping
goals per BIN directory and invoking only one make per BIN. It is
both safer and faster.

The "dhcp" command now accepts a list of interfaces to try until one
succeeds. For example:
iPXE> dhcp net0 net1 net2
If no interfaces are specified, all interfaces will be tried.
Note that interfaces that fail to DHCP are closed in order to avoid
memory exhaustion. This behavior differs from the previous "dhcp"
command implementation but should not affect any existing scripts
since a "dhcp" command failure would in any case cause the script to
abort.

COM32 binaries generally expect to run with interrupts
enabled. Syslinux does so, and COM32 programs will execute cli/sti
pairs when running a critical section, to provide mutual exclusion
against BIOS interrupt handlers. Previously, under iPXE, the IDT was
not valid, so any interrupt (e.g. a timer tick) would generally cause
the machine to triple fault.
This change introduces code to:
- Create a valid IDT at the same location that syslinux uses
- Create an "interrupt jump buffer", which contains small pieces of
code that simply record the vector number and jump to a common
handler
- Thunk down to real mode and execute the BIOS's interrupt handler
whenever an interrupt is received in a COM32 program
- Switch IDTs and enable/disable interrupts when context switching to
and from COM32 binaries
Testing done:
- Booted VMware ESX using a COM32 multiboot loader (mboot.c32)
- Built with GDBSERIAL enabled, and tested breakpoints on int22 and
com32_irq
- Put the following code in a COM32 program:
asm volatile ( "sti" );
while ( 1 );
Before this change, the machine would triple fault
immediately. After this change, it hangs as expected. Under Bochs,
it is possible to see the interrupt handler run, and the current
time in the BIOS data area gets incremented.

This patch adds a native iPXE forcedeth driver and removes the legacy
Etherboot forcedeth driver. It supports 40 different chips, compared
to the original 14.
It has been tested on a NIC with an CK804 Ethernet Controller, and the
results of downloading 5 100mb images in a row have been:
12/11/11/11/11 seconds; booting DSL using pxelinux also succeeded. The
driver has also been tested by chaining undionly.kpxe and it worked.

When we received an encrypted packet, after replacing it with its
decrypted version and freeing the encrypted original, we would
continue to look at the header of the now-freed original packet. Fix
by moving the header pointer to point at the decrypted packet instead.

Currently, if elf2efi.c is compiled using a 32-bit HOST_CC, then the
resulting elf2efi64 binary will generate 32-bit EFI binaries instead
of 64-bit EFI binaries.
The problem is that elf2efi.c uses the MDE_CPU_* definitions to decide
whether to output a 32-bit or 64-bit PE binary. However, MDE_CPU_*
gets defined in ProcessorBind.h, depending on the compiler's target
architecture. Overriding them on the command line doesn't work in the
expected way, and you can end up in cases where both MDE_CPU_IA32 and
MDE_CPU_X64 are defined.
Fix by using a separate definition, EFI_TARGET_IA32/EFI_TARGET_X64,
which is specified only on the command line.

Allow packets in the receive queue to be discarded in order to free up
memory. This avoids a potential deadlock condition in which the
missing packet can never be received because the receive queue is
occupying all of the memory available for further RX buffers.

Maintain a queue of received packets, so that lost packets need not
result in retransmission of the entire TCP window.
Increase the TCP window to 8kB, in order that we can potentially
transmit enough duplicate ACKs to trigger Fast Retransmission at the
sender.
Using a 10MB HTTP download in qemu-kvm with an artificial drop rate of
1 in 64 packets, this reduces the download time from around 26s to
around 4s.

Setting NETDEV_DISCARD_RATE to a non-zero value will cause one in
every NETDEV_DISCARD_RATE packets to be discarded at random on both
the transmit and receive datapaths, allowing the robustness of
upper-layer network protocols to be tested even in simulation
environments that provide wholly reliable packet transmission.

This patch adds a native iPXE virtio-net driver and removes the legacy
Etherboot virtio-net driver. The main reasons for doing this are:
1. Multiple virtio-net NICs are now supported by iPXE. The legacy
driver kept global state and caused issues in virtual machines with
more than one virtio-net device.
2. Faster downloads. The native iPXE driver downloads 100 MB over
HTTP in 12s, the legacy Etherboot driver in 37s. This simple
benchmark uses KVM with tap networking and the Python
SimpleHTTPServer both running on the same host.
Changes to core virtio code reduce vring descriptors to 256 (QEMU uses
128 for virtio-blk and 256 for virtio-net) and change the opaque token
from u16 to void*. Lowering the descriptor count reduces memory
consumption. The void* opaque token change makes driver code simpler.

The DHCP settings registered as a child of the netdevice settings are
not unregistered anywhere. This prevents the netdevice from being
freed on shutdown.
Fix by automatically unregistering any child settings when the parent
settings are unregistered.

iPXE currently forces sending (i.e. sends a pure ACK even in the
absence of fresh data to send) only in response to packets that
consume sequence space or that lie outside of the receive window.
This ignores the possibility that a previous ACK was not actually sent
(due to, for example, the retransmission timer running).
This does not cause incorrect behaviour, but does cause unnecessary
retransmissions from our peer. For example:
1. Peer sends final data packet (ack 106 seq 521..523)
2. We send FIN (seq 106..107 ack 523)
3. Peer sends FIN (ack 106 seq 523..524)
4. We send nothing since retransmission timer is running for our FIN
5. Peer ACKs our FIN (ack 107 seq 524..524)
6. We send nothing since this packet consumes no sequence space
7. Peer retransmits FIN (ack 107 seq 523..524)
8. We ACK peer's FIN (seq 107..107 ack 524)
What should happen at step (6) is that we should ACK the peer's FIN,
since we can deduce that we have never sent this ACK.
Fix by maintaining an "ACK pending" flag that is set whenever we are
made aware that our peer needs an ACK (whether by consuming sequence
space or by sending a packet that appears out of order), and is
cleared only when the ACK packet has been transmitted.

iPXE currently repurposes the retransmission timer to hold the TCP
connection in the TIME_WAIT state (i.e. waiting for up to 2*MSL in
case we are required to re-ACK our peer's FIN due to a lost ACK).
However, the fact that this timer is running will prevent such an ACK
from ever being sent, since the logic in tcp_xmit() assumes that a
running timer indicates that we ourselves are waiting for an ACK and
so blocks the transmission. (We always wait for an ACK before sending
our next packet, to keep our transmit data path as simple as
possible.)
Fix by using an entirely separate timer for the TIME_WAIT state, so
that packets can still be sent.

Split src_template into deps_template (which handles the definition of
foo_DEPS) and rules_template (which handles the rules referencing
foo_DEPS). The rules_template is not affected by any included header
files and so does not need to be reprocessed following a change to an
included header file.
This reduces the time required to rebuild the Makefile rules following
a change to stdint.h by around 45%, at a cost of increasing the time
required to rebuild after a "make veryclean" by around 3%.

Weak functions whose visibility is hidden may be inlined due to a bug
in GCC. Explicitly mark weak functions noinline to work around the
problem.
This makes the PXE_MENU config option work again, the PXE boot menu
was never being called because the compiler inlined a weak stub
function.
The GCC bug was identified and fixed by Richard Sandiford
<rdsandiford@googlemail.com> but in the meantime iPXE needs to
implement a workaround.

Add NonVolatile Option (nvo) and NonVolatile Storage (nvs) support to
the myri10ge driver using the EEPROM read/write mechanism provided by
the NIC's Vendor Specific PCI capability.
The myri10ge NIC is capabile of storing 64KB or more of nonvolatile
options, but this patch advertises only 512 bytes of nvo storage
because iPXE malloc's a buffer matching the total size we advertise.
512 is plenty without wasting malloc'd memory. (The 2 other drivers
currently supporting nvo advertise 256 bytes or less.)

previously provided no way to delete a setting. Also, update the

The existence and usage of the BEV entry point is covered by the PnP
spec, not the BBS spec; the BBS spec merely describes a policy for
selecting the boot device order. iPXE should therefore check only for
a PnP BIOS in order to decide whether or not to hook INT19.

Commit ea12dc0 ("[build] Avoid hard-coding the path to perl")
introduced a build failure for fully clean trees (e.g. after running
"make veryclean"), since the dependency upon $(PARSEROM) now includes
a dependency upon "perl" (which doesn't exist) rather than upon
"/usr/bin/perl" (which does exist).
There should of course be no dependency upon the perl binary at all;
the dependency should be upon "./util/parserom.pl" alone.
Fix by removing the $(PERL) from the definition of Perl-based utility
paths, and adding $(PERL) at the point of usage.

xfer_vredirect() should not be allowed to propagate to a pass-through
interface. For example, when an HTTPS connection is opened, the
redirect message should cause the TLS layer to reopen the TCP socket,
rather than causing the HTTP layer to disconnect from the TLS layer.
Fix by allowing for non-pass-through interface methods, and setting
xfer_vredirect() to be one such method.
This is slightly ugly, in that it complicates the notion of an
interface method call by adding a "pass-through" / "non-pass-through"
piece of metadata. However, the only current user of xfer_vredirect()
is iscsi.c, which uses it only because we don't yet have an
ioctl()-style call for retrieving the underlying socket address.
The new interface infrastructure allows for such a call to be created,
at which time this sole user of xfer_vredirect() can be removed,
xfer_vredirect() can cease to be an interface method and become simply
a wrapper around xfer_vreopen(), and the concept of a non-pass-through
interface method can be reverted.

Remove data-xfer as an interface type, and replace data-xfer
interfaces with generic interfaces supporting the data-xfer methods.
Filter interfaces (as used by the TLS layer) are handled using the
generic pass-through interface capability. A side-effect of this is
that deliver_raw() no longer exists as a data-xfer method. (In
practice this doesn't lose any efficiency, since there are no
instances within the current codebase where xfer_deliver_raw() is used
to pass data to an interface supporting the deliver_raw() method.)

We have several types of object interface at present (data-xfer, job
control, name resolution), and there is some duplication of
functionality between them. For example, job_done(), job_kill() and
xfer_close() are almost isomorphic to each other.
This updated version of the object interface mechanism allows for each
interface to export an arbitrary list of supported operations.
Advantages include:
Operations methods now receive a pointer to the object, rather than
a pointer to the interface. This allows an object to, for example,
implement a single close() method that can handle close() operations
from any of its exposed interfaces.
The close() operation is implemented as a generic operation (rather
than having specific variants for data-xfer, job control, etc.).
This will allow functions such as monojob_wait() to be used to wait
for e.g. a name resolution to complete.
The amount of boilerplate code required in objects is reduced, not
least because it is no longer necessary to include per-interface
methods that simply use container_of() to derive a pointer to the
object and then tail-call to a common per-object method.
The cost of adding new operations is reduced; adding a new data-xfer
operation such as stat() no longer incurs the penalty of adding a
.stat member to the operations table of all existing data-xfer
interfaces.
The data-xfer, job control and name resolution interfaces have not yet
been updated to use the new interface mechanism, but the code will
still compile and run.

It is conceivable that the process may terminate during the execution
of step(). If nothing else holds a reference to the containing
object, this would cause the object to be freed prior to returning
from step().
Add a ref_get()/ref_put() around the call to ->step() to prevent this
from happening.

The linker chooses to look for _start first and always picks
efidrvprefix.o to satisfy it (probably because it's earlier in the
archive) which causes a multiple definition error when the linker
later has to pick efiprefix.o for other symbols.
Fix by using EFI-specific TGT_LD_FLAGS with an explicit entry point.

This removes the need for inline safety wrappers, marginally reducing
the size penalty of weak functions, and works around an apparent
binutils bug that causes undefined weak symbols to not actually be
NULL when compiling with -fPIE (as EFI builds do).
A bug in versions of binutils prior to 2.16 (released in 2005) will
cause same-file weak definitions to not work with those
toolchains. Update the README to reflect our new dependency on
binutils >= 2.16.

On 64-bit systems with both 32-bit and 64-bit libraries installed, ld
tends to generate noisy "skipping incompatible /usr/lib/libxxx.so"
messages when building elf2efi.c.
Fix by passing --no-warn-search-mismatch to ld.

Currently, if you attempt to build 64-bit EFI binaries on a 32-bit
system without a suitable cross-compiling version of libbfd, the iPXE
build will die with a segmentation fault in elf2efi64.
Fix by properly handling the return value from bfd_check_format().

It is permissible for a DHCP packet containing PXE options to specify
only "discovery control", instead of the more typical boot menu +
prompt options. This is the strategy used by older versions of
dnsmasq; by specifying the discovery control as PXEBS_SKIP, they cause
vendor PXE ROMs to ignore boot server discovery and just use the
filename and next-server options in the initial (Proxy)DHCP packet.
Modify iPXE to accept this behavior, to be more compatible with the
Intel firmware.

PMKID checking is an additional pre-check that helps detect invalid
passphrases before going through the full handshaking procedure. It
takes up some amount of code size, and is not necessary from a
security perspective. It also is implemented improperly by some
routers, which was causing iPXE to give spurious authentication
errors. Remove it for these reasons.

COMBOOT API calls set the carry flag on failure. This was not being
propagated because the COMBOOT interrupt handler used iret to return
with EFLAGS restored from the stack. This patch propagates CF before
returning from the interrupt.

iPXE currently updates the TCP sequence number after delivering the
data to the application via xfer_deliver_iob(). If the application
responds to the received data by transmitting more data, this would
result in a stale ACK number appearing in the transmitted packet,
which potentially causes retransmissions and also gives the
undesirable appearance of violating causality (by sending a response
to a message that we claim not to have yet received).

Microsoft WDS can end up calling PXENV_RESTART_TFTP to execute a
second-stage NBP which then exits. Specifically, wdsnbp.com uses
PXENV_RESTART_TFTP to execute pxeboot.com, which will exit if the user
does not press F12. iPXE currently treats PXENV_RESTART_TFTP as a
normal PXE API call, and so attempts to return to wdsnbp.com, which
has just been vaporised by pxeboot.com.
Use rmsetjmp/rmlongjmp to preserve the stack state as of the initial
NBP execution, and to restore this state immediately prior to
executing the NBP loaded via PXENV_RESTART_TFTP. This matches the
behaviour in the PXE spec (which says that "if TFTP is restarted,
control is never returned to the caller"), and allows pxeboot.com to
exit relatively cleanly back to iPXE.
As with all usage of setjmp/longjmp, there may be subtle corner case
bugs due to not gracefully unwinding any state accumulated by the time
of the longjmp call, but this seems to be the only viable way to
provide the specified behaviour.

Some switch configurations will refuse to enable our port unless we
can speak LACP to inform the switch that we are alive. Add a very
simple passive LACP implementation that is sufficient to convince at
least Linux's bonding driver (when tested using qemu attached to a tap
device enslaved to a bond device configured as "mode=802.3ad").

Add an infrastructure allowing the prefix to provide an open_payload()
method for obtaining out-of-band access to the whole iPXE image. Add
a mechanism within this infrastructure that allows raw access to the
expansion ROM BAR by temporarily borrowing an address from a suitable
memory BAR on the same PCI card.
For cards that have a memory BAR that is at least as large as their
expansion ROM BAR, this allows large iPXE ROMs to be supported even on
systems where PMM fails, or where option ROM space pressure makes it
impossible to use PMM shrinking. The BIOS sees only a stub ROM of
approximately 3kB in size; the remainder (which can be well over 64kB)
is loaded only at the time iPXE is invoked.
As a nice side-effect, an iPXE .mrom image will continue to work even
if its PMM-allocated areas are overwritten between initialisation and
invocation.

The only remaining useful function of makerom.pl is to correct the ROM
and PnP checksums; the PCI IDs are set at link time, and padding is
performed using padimg.pl.
Option::ROM already provides a facility for correcting the checksums,
so we may as well just use this instead.

It is common for system memory maps to be grotesquely unreliable
during POST. Many sanity checks have been added to the memory map
reading code, but these do not catch all problems.
Skip relocation entirely if called during POST. This should avoid the
problems typically encountered, at the cost of slightly disrupting the
memory map of an operating system booted via iPXE when iPXE was
entered during POST. Since this is a very rare special case (used,
for example, when reflashing an experimental ROM that would otherwise
prevent the system from completing POST), this is an acceptable cost.

Some BIOSes (at least some AMI BIOSes) tend to refuse to allocate a
single area large enough to hold both the iPXE image source and the
temporary decompression area, despite promising a largest available
PMM memory block of several megabytes. This causes ROM image
shrinking to fail on these BIOSes, with undesirable consequences:
other option ROMs may be disabled due to shortage of option ROM space,
and the iPXE ROM may itself be corrupted by a further BIOS bug (again,
observed on an AMI BIOS) which causes large ROMs to end up overlapping
reserved areas of memory. This can potentially render a system
unbootable via any means.
Increase the chances of a successful PMM allocation by dropping the
alignment requirement (which is redundant now that we can enable A20
from within the prefix); this allows us to reduce the allocation size
from 2MB down to only the required size.
Increase the chances still further by using two separate allocations:
one to hold the image source (i.e. the copy of the ROM before being
shrunk) and the other to act as the decompression area. This allows
ROM image shrinking to take place even on systems that fail to
allocate enough memory for the temporary decompression area.
Improve the behaviour of iPXE in systems with multiple iPXE ROMs by
sharing PMM allocations where possible. Image source areas can be
shared with any iPXE ROMs with a matching build identifier, and the
temporary decompression area can be shared with any iPXE ROMs with the
same uncompressed size (rounded up to the nearest 128kB).

treading on any PMM-allocated areas, in BIOSes where PMM support

Randomly generate a 32-bit build identifier that can be used to
identify identical iPXE ROMs when multiple such ROMs are present in a
system (e.g. when a multi-function NIC exposes the same iPXE ROM image
via each function's expansion ROM BAR).

The existing "iPXE starting execution" message indicates that the BEV
(or INT19) was invoked, but gives no indication on whether or not the
iPXE source was successfully retrieved (e.g. from PMM). Split the
"starting execution message" into "starting execution...ok"; the "ok"
indicates that the main iPXE body was successfully decompressed and
relocated.

Use the shared code in libflat to perform the A20 transitions
automatically on each transition from real to protected mode. This
allows us to remove all explicit calls to gateA20_set().
The old warnings about avoiding automatically enabling A20 are
essentially redundant; they date back to the time when we would always
start hammering the keyboard controller without first checking to see
if gate A20 was already enabled (which it almost always is).

iPXE currently insists on residing in an even megabyte. This imposes
undesirably severe constraints upon our PMM allocation strategy, and
limits our options for mechanisms to access ROMs greater than 64kB in
size.
Add A20 handling code to libflat so that prefixes are able to access
memory even in odd megabytes.
The algorithms and tuning parameters in the new A20 handling code are
based upon a mixture of the existing iPXE A20 code and the A20 code
from the 2.6.32 Linux kernel.

The flatten_real_mode routine is not needed until after decompressing
.text16.early, and currently performs various contortions to
compensate for the fact that .prefix may not be writable. Move
flatten_real_mode to .text16.early to save on (compressed) binary size
and simplify the code.

Add a section .text16.early which is always kept inline with the
prefix. This will allow for some code sharing between the .prefix and
.text16 sections.
Note that the simple solution of just prepending the .prefix section
to the .text16 section will not work, because a bug in Wyse Streaming
Manager server (WLDRM13.BIN) requires us to place a dummy PXENV+ entry
point at the start of .text16.

Use flat real mode rather than 16-bit protected mode for access to
high memory during installation. This simplifies the code by reducing
the number of CPU modes we need to think about, and also increases the
amount of code in common between the normal and (somewhat
hypothetical) KEEP_IT_REAL methods of operation.

When returning to real mode, set 4GB segment limits instead of 64kB
limits. This change improves our chances of successfully returning to
a PMM-capable BIOS aftering entering iPXE during POST; the BIOS will
have set up flat real mode before calling our initialisation point,
and may be disconcerted if we then return in genuine real mode.
This change is unlikely to break anything, since any code that might
potentially access beyond 64kB must use addr32 prefixes to do so; if
this is the case then it is almost certainly code written to expect
flat real mode anyway.
Note that it is not possible to restore the real-mode segment limits
to their original values, since it is not possible to know which
protected-mode segment descriptor was originally used to initialise
the limit portion of the segment register.

The .hrom prefix provides an experimental mechanism for reducing
option ROM space usage on systems where PMM allocation fails, by
pretending that PMM allocation succeeded and gave us an address fixed
at compilation time. This is unreliable, and potentially dangerous.
In particular, when multiple gPXE ROMs are present in a system, each
gPXE ROM will assume ownership of the same fixed address, resulting in
undefined behaviour.

The .xrom prefix provides an experimental mechanism for loading ROM
images greater than 64kB in size by mapping the expansion ROM BAR in
at a hopefully-unused address. This is unreliable, and potentially
dangerous. In particular, there is no guarantee that any PCI bridges
between the CPU and the device will respond to accesses for the
"unused" memory region that is chosen, and it is possible that the
process of scanning for the "unused" memory region may end up issuing
reads to other PCI devices. If this ends up trampling on a register
with read side-effects belonging to an unrelated PCI device, this may
cause undefined behaviour.

gPXE currently overwrites the filename stored in the cached DHCP
packets when a call to PXENV_TFTP_READ_FILE or PXENV_RESTART_TFTP is
made. This code has existed for many years as a workaround for RIS,
which seemed to require that this be done.
pxe_set_cached_filename() causes problems with the Bootix NBP, and a
recent test demonstrates that RIS will complete successfully even with

Current gPXE code always returns "OURS" in response to
PXENV_UNDI_ISR:START. This is harmless for non-shared interrupt
lines, and avoids the complexity of trying to determine whether or not
we really did cause the interrupt. (This is a non-trivial
determination; some drivers don't have interrupt support and hook the
system timer interrupt instead, for example.)
A problem occurs when we have a shared interrupt line, the other
device asserts an interrupt, and the controlling ISR does not chain to
the other device's ISR when we return "OURS". Under these
circumstances, the other device's ISR never executes, and so the
interrupt remains asserted, causing an interrupt storm.
Work around this by returning "OURS" if and only if our net device's
interrupt is currently recorded as being enabled. Since we always
disable interrupts as a result of a call to PXENV_UNDI_ISR:START, this
guarantees that we will eventually (on the second call) return "NOT
OURS", allowing the other ISR to be called. Under normal operation,
including a non-shared interrupt situation, this change will make no
difference since PXENV_UNDI_ISR:START would be called only when
interrupts were enabled anyway.

The interrupt control mechanism on Phantom cards has changed
substantially since the driver was initially written. This updates
the code to match the mechanism used in production firmware.
This is sufficient to allow DOS wget to function successfully using
the 3Com UNDI/NDIS, Intel UNDI/NDIS, and UNDIPD.COM UNDI/PD stacks.

The vxge driver code is split over several files, including vxge_main.c.
This causes the build system and ROM-o-matic to see the driver as
"vxge_main".
This patch adds a stub vxge.c which takes up no space but gives the
driver its proper name, "vxge".

The function recorder is a crash and hang debugging tool. It logs each
function call into a memory buffer while gPXE runs. After the machine
is reset, and if the contents of memory have not been overwritten, gPXE
will detect the memory buffer and print out its contents.
This allows developers to see a trace of the last functions called
before a crash or hang. The util/fnrec.sh script can be used to convert
the function addresses back into symbol names.

Embedded image support uses .incbin in inline assembly to include binary
files. The file dependency is not spotted by ccache when deciding
whether or not to rebuild embedded.o. This results in builds that
contain an outdated version of the embedded image when ccache is used.

In the actual SYSLINUX suite's comboot implementation, the version
string is prefixed by CR LF, and the copyright string has a leading
space. Some tools (specifically HDT) assume these padding characters
exist, so we should probably return strings in a similar format.

Loading multiple UNDI instances would be useful in systems that have
several network cards with vendor PXE ROMs. However, we cannot rely on
UNDI ROMs working correctly with multiple instances loaded
simultaneously.
The gPXE UNDI driver supports the following multi-NIC configurations:
1. Chainloading undionly.kpxe on a specific NIC.
2. Loading the UNDI driver for the first probed device and ignoring all
other UNDI devices in the system.
This patch refuses to probe additional UNDI devices so there can never
be multiple instances of UNDI loaded.

Debian based systems may have genisoimage(1) instead of mkisofs(1).
They are command-line compatible so the util/geniso script should be
able to choose either one.
This patch also changes the use of the mkisofs quiet (-q) flag to its
long form (-quiet). This should be compatible with more versions of
cdrtools and cdrkit.

Commit 3d9dd93 introduced a regression in HTTP: if a URI without a
path is specified (e.g. http://netboot.me), we send the empty string
as our GET request. Reintroduce an extra slash when uri->path is NULL,
to turn this into the expected GET /.

Previously, if none of the URI parts requested existed in the passed
URI, unparse_uri() would not touch the destination buffer at all; this
could lead to use of uninitialized data. Fix by setting buf[0] = '\0'
before unparsing whenever we have room to do so.

The rtl818x driver uses programmed I/O but has a fallback to
memory-mapped I/O registers. The fallback currently will not work since
the registers are accessed using inl()/outl() programmed I/O functions
in the driver. This patch removes the fallback to we fail cleanly when
programmed I/O is not possible.

This driver uses programmed I/O to access hardware registers. There is
a stray memory-mapped I/O read on a programmed I/O address. Perhaps
this is an artifact of porting the driver. Fix this by converting it to
programmed I/O.

It might be the case that we wish to chain to an NBP without
being "in the way". We now implement a hook in our exit path
for gPXE *.*pxe build targets. The hook is a pointer to a
SEG16:OFF16 which we try to jump to during exit. By default,
this pointer results in the usual exit path.
We also implement the "pxenv_file_exit_hook" PXE API routine
to allow the user to specify an alternate SEG16:OFF16 to jump
to during exit.
Unfortunately, this additional PXE extension has a cost
in code size. Fortunately, a look at the size difference
for a gPXE .rom build target shows zero size difference
after compression.
The routine is documented in doc/pxe_extensions as follows:

Instead of keeping only the best IP and PXE offers, store all of them,
and pick the best to use just before a request is sent. This allows
priority differentiation to work even when lower-priority offers
provide PXE options, and improves robustness at sites with broken PXE
servers intermingled with working ones: when a ProxyDHCP request times
out, instead of giving up, we try the next PXE offer we've received.
It also allows us to avoid breaking up combined IP+PXE offers, which
can be important with some firewall configurations. This behavior
matches that of most vendor PXE ROMs.
Store a reference to the DHCPOFFER packet in the offer structure, so
that when registering settings after a successful ACK we can register
the proxy PXE settings we originally received; this removes the need
for a nonstandard duplicate REQUEST/ACK to port 67 of proxy servers
like dnsmasq that provide PXE options in the OFFER.
Total cost: 450 bytes uncompressed.

Currently, handling of URI escapes is ad-hoc; escaped strings are
stored as-is in the URI structure, and it is up to the individual
protocol to unescape as necessary. This is error-prone and expensive
in terms of code size. Modify this behavior by unescaping in
parse_uri() and escaping in unparse_uri() those fields that typically
handle URI escapes (hostname, user, password, path, query, fragment),
and allowing unparse_uri() to accept a subset of fields to print so
it can be easily used to generate e.g. the escaped HTTP path?query
request.

A script loaded via autoboot may want to get some of the settings (MAC
address, IP address, et cetera) for the interface via which it was
loaded, in order to pass them to the operating system. Previously such
a script had no way to determine what to put in the X of ${netX/foo}.
Solve this problem by transparently forwarding accesses to the real
settings associated with the most recently opened network device,
so scripts in this situation can say literally ${netX/foo} and get
the foo setting they want.

The standard option ROM format provides a header indicating the size
of the entire ROM, which the BIOS will reserve space for, load, and
call as necessary. However, this space is strictly limited to 128k for
all ROMs. gPXE ameliorates this somewhat by reserving space for itself
in high memory and relocating the majority of its code there, but on
systems prior to PCI3 enough space must still be present to load the
ROM in the first place. Even on PCI3 systems, the BIOS often limits the
size of ROM it will load to a bit over 64kB.
These space problems can be solved by providing an artificially small
size in the ROM header: just enough to let the prefix code (at the
beginning of the ROM image) be loaded by the BIOS. To the BIOS, the
gPXE ROM will appear to be only a few kilobytes; it can then load
the rest of itself by accessing the ROM directly using the PCI
interface reserved for that task.
There are a few problems with this approach. First, gPXE needs to find
an unmapped region in memory to map the ROM so it can read from it;
this is done using the crude but effective approach of scanning high
memory (over 0xF0000000) for a sufficiently large region of all-ones
(0xFF) reads. (In x86 architecture, all-ones is returned for accesses
to memory regions that no mapped device can satisfy.) This is not
provably valid in all situations, but has worked well in practice.
More importantly, this type of ROM access can only work if the PCI ROM
BAR exists at all. NICs on physical add-in PCI cards generally must
have the BAR in order for the BIOS to be able to load their ROM, but
ISA cards and LAN-on-Motherboard cards will both fail to load gPXE
using this scheme.
Due to these uncertainties, it is recommended that .xrom only be used
when a regular .rom image is infeasible due to crowded option ROM
space. However, when it works it could allow loading gPXE images
as large as a flash chip one could find - 128kB or even higher.

For extremely tight space requirements and specific applications, it is
sometimes desirable to create gPXE images that cannot provide the PXE API
functionality to client programs. Add a configuration header option,
PXE_STACK, that can be removed to remove this stack. Also add PXE_MENU
to control the PXE boot menu, which most uses of gPXE do not need.

If we don't unload the PXE stack before executing gPXE, automatically
take advantage of the cached DHCPACK that the underlying/parent PXE
stack can provide. If that cached DHCPACK contains option 175.178, or
the user sets the use-cached setting before invoking DHCP, the real
DHCP request will be skipped and the cached DHCPACK will be used for
network configuration. Otherwise, the cached settings block is thrown
away as soon as a fresh one is acquired.

When a DHCP session is started (using autoboot or a command-line `dhcp
net0'), check whether the new setting use-cached (DHCP option 175.178)
is TRUE; if so, skip DHCP and rely on currently registered
settings. This lets one combine a static IP with autoboot.
Before checking the use-cached setting, call a weak
get_cached_dhcpack() hook that can be implemented by particular builds
of gPXE supporting some fashion of retrieving a cached DHCPACK packet.
If one is available, it is registered as an options source, and then
either that packet's option 175.178 or the user's prior manual
use-cached setting can allow skipping duplicate DHCP.
Using cached packets is not the default because DHCP servers are often
configured to give gPXE different options than they give a vendor PXE
client; in order to break the infinite loop of PXE chaining, one would
need to load a gPXE with an embedded image that does something more
than autoboot.

it lets us get cached DHCP packets to avoid re-DHCP when working with
embedded images.

Weak symbols are a useful tool in eliminating unnecessary dependencies
between object files, but they are somewhat dangerous because one must
remember to test the weak symbol against NULL before using it. To
rectify that, add macros for declaring weak functions that will return
a default value inline if the file defining them is not available at
link time.

pxenv_tftp_get_fsize is an API call that PXE clients can call to
obtain the size of a remote file. It is implemented by starting a TFTP
transfer with pxe_tftp_open, waiting for the response and then
stopping the transfer with pxe_tftp_close(). This leaves the session
hanging on the TFTP server and it will try to resend the packet
repeatedly (verified with tftpd-hpa) until it times out.
This patch adds a method "tftpsize" that will abort the transfer after
the first packet is received from the server. This will terminate the
session on the server and is the same behaviour as Intel's PXE ROM
exhibits.
Together with a qemu patch to handle the ERROR packet (submitted to
qemu's mailing list), this resolves a specific issue where booting
pxegrub with qemu's TFTP server would be slow or hang.
I've tested this against qemu's tftp server and against my normal boot
infrastructure (tftpd-hpa). Booting pxegrub and loading extra files
now produces a trace similar to Intel's PXE client and there are no
spurious retransmits from tftpd any more.

The retry timer is used to retransmit TFTP packets lost on the network,
and to start a new connection. There is an unnecessary delay while
waiting for name resolution because the timer period is fixed and cannot
be shortened when name resolution completes. This patch keeps the timer
period at zero while name resolution takes place so that no time is lost
once before sending the first packet.

IBM's Tivoli Provisioning Manager for OS Deployment, when acting as a
ProxyDHCP server, sends an initial offer with a vendor class of "PXEClient"
and vendor-encapsulated options that have nothing to do with PXE. To
differentiate between this case and the case of a ProxyDHCP server that
sends all PXE options in its initial offer, modify gPXE to check for
the presence of an encapsulated PXE boot menu option (43.9) instead of
simply checking for the existence of any encapsulated options at all.
This is the same check used by the Intel vendor PXE ROM.

The PXE standard provides examples of ProxyDHCP responses being encoded both
as type DHCPOFFER and DHCPACK, but currently we only accept DHCPACKs. Since
there are PXE servers in existence that respond to ProxyDHCPREQUESTs with
DHCPOFFERs, modify gPXE's ProxyDHCP pruning logic to treat both types of
responses equally.

The bin/xxx.sizes targets examine the list of obj_ symbols in bin/xxx.tmp
to determine which objects to measure the size of. These symbols have been
normalized to C identifiers, so the result is an error message from `size'
when examining a target that includes objects that were originally named
with hyphens.
Fix by turning obj_foo_bar into $(wildcard bin/foo?bar.o) instead of
bin/foo_bar.o.

Change the behaviour for adding DHCP options into a DHCP packet so
that we now append options, rather than insert them in front of
whatever options might already be present.
Apparently, the DHCP relay logic on a Nortel 470-48T layer 2 switch
cares about the order of DHCP options. If we build a DHCP packet
pre-populated with some options, their order will now be preserved,
except for encapsulated options.

gPXE currently takes advantage of the feature of PCI3.0 that allows
option ROMs to relocate the bulk of their code to high memory and so
take up only a small amount of space in the option ROM area. Currently,
the relocation can only take place if the BIOS's implementation of PMM
can be made to return blocks aligned to an even megabyte, because of
the A20 gate. AMI BIOSes, in particular, will not return allocations
that gPXE can use.
Ameliorate the situation somewhat by adding a prefix, .hrom, that works
identically to .rom except in the case that PMM allocation fails. Where
.rom would give up and place itself entirely in option ROM space, .hrom
moves to a block (assumed free) at HIGHMEM_LOADPOINT = 4MB. This allows
for the use of larger gPXE ROMs than would otherwise be possible.
Because there is no way to check that the area at HIGHMEM_LOADPOINT is
really free, other devices using that memory during the boot process
will cause failure for gPXE, the other device, or both. In practice
such conflicts will likely not occur, but this prefix should still be
considered EXPERIMENTAL.

Contrary to the IEEE specification, some access points apparently
set the Spectrum Mgmt bit in the capabilities field even when
broadcasting on a 2.4GHz band that does not require spectrum
management. Allow gPXE to attempt to connect to such networks;
if spectrum management is really required, our advertisement
of capabilities not including it will result in an association
failure.

EAPOL is a container protocol that can wrap either EAP packets or
802.11 EAPOL-Key frames. For cleanliness' sake, add a stub that strips
the framing and sends packets off to the appropriate handler if it
is compiled in.

WEP is a highly flawed cryptosystem, barely better than no encryption at all,

The disk partition prefix code in hdprefix.S reads the gPXE image in
tracks, not individual sectors. This means it will attempt to read
beyond the end of the image if the .hd image type is not padded to 32
KB.
This issue is affects virtualization software which may execute a .hd or
.usb image file directly - effectively running a machine with a tiny
disk containing just the gPXE image. Boot will fail when gPXE tries to
read beyond the end of disk.
The Multiboot memory map needs to be built after unhiding gPXE and
downloaded images from memory. Solaris faults during boot when trying
to access the ramdisk, which is hidden from the memory map while gPXE is
executing. This issue is fixed by using the memory map from after gPXE
unhides itself.

The 82571 supports an alternate MAC address location in NVRAM.
When this is set, use this for the MAC rather than the default
physical MAC address.

It is often the case that some module of gPXE is only relevant if the
subsystem it depends on is already being included. For instance,
commands to manage wireless interfaces are quite useless if no
compiled-in driver has pulled in the wireless networking stack. There
may be a user-modifiable configuration options for these dependent
modules, but even if enabled, they should not be included when they
would be useless.
Solve this by allowing the creation of config_subsystem.c, for
configuration directives like those in the global config.c that should
only be considered when subsystem.c is included in the final gPXE
build.
For consistency, move core/config.c to the config/ directory, where
the other config_subsystem.c files will eventually reside.

REQUIRE_SYMBOL() formerly used a formulation of symbol requirement
that would allow a link to succeed despite lacking a required symbol,
because it did not introduce any relocations. Fix by renaming it to
REQUEST_SYMBOL() (since the soft-requirement behavior can be useful)
and add a REQUIRE_SYMBOL() that truly requires.
Add EXPORT_SYMBOL() and IMPORT_SYMBOL() for REQUEST_SYMBOL()-like
behavior that allows one to make use of the symbol, by combining a
weak external on the symbol itself with a REQUEST_SYMBOL() of a second
symbol.

The PXE menu code also treated the type as big-endian, which went
unnoticed until the first fix because its ntohs() was matched by a
htons() in the PXE boot server discovery code.

Some BIOSes (observed with an AMI BIOS on a SunFire X2200) seem to
reset the BIOS drive counter at 40:75 after a failed boot attempt.
This causes problems when attempting a Windows direct-to-iSCSI
installation: bootmgr.exe calls INT 13,0800 and gets told that there
are no hard disks, so never bothers to read the MBR in order to obtain
the boot disk signature. The Windows iSCSI initiator will detect the
iBFT and connect to the target, and everything will appear to work
except for the error message "This computer's hardware may not support
booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in
the computer's BIOS menu."
Fix by checking the BIOS drive counter on every INT 13 call, and
updating it whenever necessary.
The case of an unsupported SAN protocol will currently not result in
any error message. Fix by printing the error message at the top level
using strerror(), rather than using hard-coded error messages in the
error paths.
The latest RTL-generated register lists include (mostly redundant)
xxx_MSB values alongside xxx_LSB and xxx_RMASK, and also include
default register values.
Some subnet managers expect the GetResponse from a SetPortInfo MAD to
contain the new link state. The transition is not immediate, so we
often end up returning the previous link state. This can cause the SM
to fail to activate the port.
Fix by waiting for up to 20us for the link state transition to take
effect.
The first byte of the IPoIB MAC address is used for flags indicating
support for "connected mode". Strip out the non-QPN bits of the first
dword when constructing the address vector for transmitted IPoIB
packets, so as not to end up passing an invalid QPN in the BTH.
IBA section 14.2.5.2 states that "the contents of the NodeDescription
attribute are the same for all ports on a node". Satisfy this by
using the HCA GUID rather than the port GUID to form the node
description string.
We do not discard routing table entries when closing an interface. It
is plausible that multiple interfaces may be on the same physical
network; if so, then we may end up in a situation whereby outbound
packets attempt to route via a closed interface.
Fix by ignoring non-open net devices in ipv4_route().
ipv4.c calculates the default subnet mask before calling
fetch_ipv4_setting() to retrieve the configured subnet mask (if any).
However, as of commit 612f4e7 "[settings] Avoid returning
uninitialised data on error in fetch_xxx_setting()",
fetch_ipv4_setting() will zero the IP address if the setting does not
exist, rather than leaving it unaltered.
Fix by fetching the setting first and calculating the default subnet
mask only if necessary.
ipv4.c uses a gateway address of INADDR_NONE to represent "no
gateway". It initialises the gateway address to INADDR_NONE before
calling fetch_ipv4_setting() to retrieve the configured gateway
address (if any).
However, as of commit 612f4e7 "[settings] Avoid returning
uninitialised data on error in fetch_xxx_setting()",
fetch_ipv4_setting() will zero the IP address if the setting does not
exist, rather than leaving it unaltered.
Fix by using a zero IP address to indicate "no gateway", so that a
non-existent gateway address setting will be treated as such.
The PXE type field is canonically little-endian, but the pxebs command
treats it as big-endian in converting the type number passed on the
command line to a field value to search against. Fix, to prevent the
necessity of incantations like "pxebs net0 1536" to select menu item #6.

The iBFT is Ethernet-centric in providing only six bytes for a MAC
address. This is most probably an indirect consequence of a similar
design flaw in the Windows NDIS stack. (The WinOF IPoIB stack
performs all sorts of contortions in order to pretend to the NDIS
layer that it is dealing with six-byte MAC addresses.)
There is no sensible way in which to extend the iBFT without breaking
compatibility with programs that expect to parse it. Add the notion
of an "Ethernet-compatible" MAC address to our link layer abstraction,
so that link layers can provide their own workarounds for this
limitation.

Some BIOSes set the PCI cacheline size to zero for the card; the ath5k
driver fixes it to a reasonable in PCI config space, but failed to
correct the internal value it had already read. This resulted in
divide-by-zero errors when cacheline-aligning various data structures.
Fix by setting the internal cachelsz to a sane value at the same time
as we write that value to PCI config space.

This adds basic rfkill support for enabling the wireless card on certain
laptops, and changes miscellaneous other details that may help in obscure
cases.
Also change the error handling to not report CRC errors, which due to the
basic facts of wireless may happen even more frequently than valid packets.

Add the 82576 to the e1000 driver.
- Examining the Linux 2.6.30-rc4 igb driver, which supports this card and;
- Information available in the Intel® 82576 Gigabit Ethernet
Controller Datasheet v2.1, which is available from Intel's web site.
I only have a dual-ported card with Copper PHY, so any code paths relating
to Fibre haven't been tested. Also, I have only tested using auto-negotiation
of speed and duplex, and no flow control. Other code paths relating to
those settings also have not been exercised.

A jump instruction starts at the third byte of an option ROM image, and
it is required that the bytes in the whole image add up to zero. To
achieve this, a checksum byte is usually placed after the jump. The jump
can be either a short jump (2 bytes, EB xx) or a near jump (3 bytes,
E9 xx xx). gPXE's romprefix.S uses a near jump, but modrom.pl assumed
a short jump, and clobbered the high byte of the offset. This caused
modrom-modified gPXE ROM images to crash the system during POST.
Fix by making modrom.pl place the checksum at byte 6, like makerom.pl does.

Both methods disabled packet tx and rx just to have it enabled again
by calling a3c90x_reset().
Fixed by disabling tx and rx after the call to a3c90x_reset().
Tested by booting Ubuntu intrepid(8.10) directly from gPXE and pxelinux.

Some systems will retry their boot sequence in the event of a boot
failure. On these systems, the second and subsequent boot attempts
will fail to initialise the Hermon HCA.
Fix by resetting the HCA during probe(). This incurs a one-second
cost, but there seems to be no viable alternative.

Some devices can only be reset via a mechanism that also resets the
card's PCI core, thus necessitating a backup and restore of all or
part of the PCI configuration space across a reset.
802.11 multicast hashing is the same as standard Ethernet hashing, so
just expose and use eth_mc_hash().

The recent change to process_add() to detect duplicate process
additions relies on the fact that all processes will be initialized
using process_init_stopped() before being passed to that function.
The autoassociation process was not initialized in this fashion, so
process_add() erroneously detected it as a duplicate.
Fix by using process_init_stopped() to initialize the autoassociation
process instead of setting the step member directly.

For IPoIB, the chaddr field is too small (16 bytes) to contain the
20-byte IPoIB link-layer address. RFC4390 mandates that we should
pass an empty chaddr field and rely on the DHCP client identifier
instead. This has many problems, not least of which is that a client
identifier containing an IPoIB link-layer address is not very useful
from the point of view of creating DHCP reservations, since the QPN
component is assigned at runtime and may vary between boots.
Leave the DHCP client identifier as-is, to avoid breaking existing
setups as far as possible, but expose the real hardware address (the
port GUID) via the DHCP chaddr field, using the broadcast flag to
instruct the DHCP server not to use this chaddr value as a link-layer
address.
This makes it possible (at least with ISC dhcpd) to create DHCP
reservations using host declarations such as:

IPoIB has a 20-byte link-layer address, of which only eight bytes
represent anything relating to a "hardware address".
The PXE and EFI SNP APIs expect the permanent address to be the same
size as the link-layer address, so fill in the "permanent address"
field with the initial link layer address (as generated by
register_netdev() based upon the real hardware address).
The hardware address is an intrinsic property of the hardware, while
the link-layer address can be changed at runtime. This separation is
exposed via APIs such as PXE and EFI, but is currently elided by gPXE.
Expose the hardware and link-layer addresses as separate properties
within a net device. Drivers should now fill in hw_addr, which will
be used to initialise ll_addr at the time of calling
register_netdev().
The option ROM header contains a one-byte field indicating the number
of 512-byte sectors in the ROM image. Currently it is linked to
contain the number of uncompressed sectors, with an instruction to the
compressor to correct it. This causes link failure when the
uncompressed size of the ROM image is over 128k.
Fix by replacing the SUBx compressor fixup with an ADDx fixup that
adds the total compressed output length, scaled as requested, to an
addend stored in the field where the final length value will be
placed. This is similar to the behavior of ELF relocations, and
ensures that an overflow error will not be generated unless the
compressed size is still too large for the field.
This also allows us to do away with the _filesz_pgh and _filesz_sect
calculations exported by the linker script.
Output tested bitwise identical to the old SUBx mechanism on hd, dsk,
lkrn, and rom prefixes, on both 32-bit and 64-bit processors.

The SRP Boot Firmware Table serves a similar role to the iSCSI and AoE
Boot Firmware Tables; it provides information required by the loaded
OS in order to establish a connection back to the SRP boot device.
There is diagnostic value in being able to disambiguate between the
various reasons why an IB CM has rejected a connection attempt. In
particular, reason 8 "invalid service ID" can be used to identify an
incorrect SRP service_id root-path component, and reason 28 "consumer
reject" corresponds to a genuine SRP login rejection IU, which can be
passed up to the SRP layer.
For rejection reasons other than "consumer reject", we should not pass
through the private data, since it is most likely generated by the CM
without any protocol-specific knowledge.
With iSCSI, connection attempts are expensive; it may take many
seconds to determine that a connection will fail. SRP connection
attempts are much less expensive, so we may as well avoid the
"optimisation" of declaring a state of permanent failure after a
certain number of attempts. This allows a gPXE SRP initiator to
resume operations after an arbitrary amount of SRP target downtime.
Generate errors within individual MAD transaction consumers such as
ib_pathrec.c and ib_mcast.c, rather than within ib_mi.c. This allows
for more meaningful error messages to eventually be displayed to the
user.
SRP is the SCSI RDMA Protocol. It allows for a method of SAN booting
whereby the target is responsible for reading and writing data using
Remote DMA directly to the initiator's memory. The software initiator
merely sends and receives SCSI commands; it never has to touch the
actual data.
The minimal-surprise behaviour, when no explicit SRP initiator device
is specified, will probably be to use the most recently opened
Infiniband device. This matches our behaviour with using the most
recently opened net device for PXE, iSCSI, AoE, NBI, etc.
SRP over Infiniband uses a protocol whereby data is sent via a
combination of the CM private data fields and the RC queue pair
itself. This seems sufficiently generic that it's worth having
available as a separate protocol.
The ACK timeout determines how long we take to notice a failed
Reliable Connection. Reducing it from the arbitrary value of 19 down
to 14 reduces the individual ACK timeout from around 2.1s to 67ms;
this in turn reduces the time to tear down and re-establish a broken
SRP session from around 30s to around 1s.
The Infiniband Communication Manager will refuse to establish a
connection if it believes the connection is already established.
There is no immediately obvious way to ask it to tear down the
existing connection and replace it; to issue a DREP we would need to
know the local and remote communication IDs used for the previous
connection setup.
We can work around this by randomising the high-order bits of the
queue pair number; these have no significance to the hardware, but are
sufficient to convince the IB CM that this is a different connection.
We will terminate our transaction as soon as we receive the first CM
REP, since that provides all the state that we need. However, the
peer may resend the REP if it didn't see our RTU, and if we don't
respond with another RTU we risk being disconnected. (This protocol
appears not to handle retries gracefully.)
Fix by adding a management agent that will listen for these duplicate
REPs and send back an RTU.
When a probe found no results, the list head of beacons would not be
freed, leaking 16 bytes of memory per probe.

Previously the maximum packet length was computed using an erroneous
understanding of the role of the MIC field in TKIP-encrypted packets.
The field is actually considered to be part of the MSDU (encrypted and
fragmented data), not the MPDU (container for each encrypted
fragment). As such its size does not contribute to cryptographic
overhead outside the data field's size limitations. The net result is
that the previous maximum packet length value was 4 bytes too long;
fix it to the correct value of 2352.

Some cards (such as ath5k) always need to tune to a particular channel
when they are reset; the reset may happen upon open(), which is before
the channels array would be set up (in prepare_probe()). Avoid tuning
the card to an inconsistent state by copying the hardware
supported-channels array to the 802.11 device's allowable-channels
array even before channels are "properly" set up.

The prior net80211 model of physical-layer behavior for drivers was
overly simplistic and limited the drivers that could be written. To
be more flexible, split the driver-provided list of supported rates by
band, and add a means for specifying a list of supported channels.
Allow drivers to specify a hardware channel value that will be tied to
uses of the channel.
Expose net80211_duration() to drivers, and make the rate it uses in
its computations configurable, so that it can be used in calculating
durations that must be set in hardware for ACK and CTS packets. Add
net80211_cts_duration() for the common case of calculating the
duration for a CTS packet.

A management interface is the component through which both local and
remote management agents are accessed.
This new implementation of a management interface allows for the user
to react to timed-out transactions, and also allows for cancellation
of in-progress transactions.
Some BIOSes support the BIOS Boot Specification (BBS) but fail to set
%es:%di correctly when calling the option ROM initialisation entry
point. This causes gPXE to identify the BIOS as non-PnP (and so
non-BBS), leaving the user unable to control the boot order.
Fix by scanning for the $PnP signature ourselves, rather than relying
on the BIOS having passed in %es:%di correctly.

The IBA specification refers to management "interfaces" and "agents".
The interface is the component that connects to the queue pair and
sends and receives MADs; the agent is the component that constructs
the reply to the MAD.
Rename the IB_{QPN,QKEY,QPT} constants as a first step towards making
this separation in gPXE.
The function __intel_new_proc_init() (called implicitly when building
using icc) is marked with __attribute__((cdecl)). This breaks
building on x86_64, where cdecl is meaningless.
Fix by replacing with the existing __libgcc macro, which is already
defined to be "__attribute__((cdecl))" for i386 builds and empty for
x86_64 builds.
The MIT and ISC licenses are legally equivalent to the bsd2 license,
but with slightly different verbiage.

In several places, we currently use size_t to represent a difference
between TCP sequence numbers. This can cause compiler warnings
relating to printf format specifiers, since the result of
(uint32_t+size_t) may be an unsigned long on some compilers.
Fix by using uint32_t for all variables that represent a difference
between TCP sequence numbers.

The geniso, genliso and gensdsk scripts contain hard-coded temporary
directory names, and so could potentially collide with each other when
run as part of a concurrent build (e.g. "make -j 4").
Fix by using mktemp to generate suitable temporary directory names.
We add a syslinux floppy disk type using parts of the genliso script.
This floppy image cat be dd'ed to a physical floppy or used in
instances where a virtual floppy with an mountable DOS filesystem is
useful.
We also modify the genliso script to only generate .liso images
rather than creating images depending on how it is called.

The Linux IB Communication Manager will always send MADs to QP1,
rather than back to the originating QP. On Hermon, QP1 is by default
handled by the embedded firmware. We can change this, but the cost is
that we have to handle both QP0 and QP1 (i.e. we have to provide SMA
as well as GMA service in software), and we have to use MLX queues
rather than standard UD queues (i.e. we have to construct the UD
datagrams by hand).
There doesn't seem to be any viable way around this situation, ugly
though it is.
Queue pairs are now assumed to be created in the INIT state, with a
call to ib_modify_qp() required to bring the queue pair to the RTS
state.
ib_modify_qp() no longer takes a modification list; callers should
modify the relevant queue pair parameters (e.g. qkey) directly and
then call ib_modify_qp() to synchronise the changes to the hardware.
The packet sequence number is now a property of the queue pair, rather
than of the device.
Each queue pair may have an associated address vector. For RC queue
pairs, this is the address vector that will be programmed in to the
hardware as the remote address. For UD queue pairs, it will be used
as the default address vector if none is supplied to ib_post_send().
Now that MAD handlers no longer return a status code, we can allow
them to return a pointer to a MAD structure if and only if they want
to send a response. This provides a more natural and flexible
approach than using a "response method" field within the handler's
descriptor.
MAD handlers have to set the status fields within the MAD itself
anyway, in order to provide a meaningful response MAD; the additional
gPXE return status code is just noise.
Note that we probably don't need to ever explicitly set the status to
IB_MGMT_STATUS_OK, since it should already have this value from the
request. (By not explicitly setting the status in this way, we can
safely have ib_sma_set_xxx() call ib_sma_get_xxx() in order to
generate the GetResponse MAD without worrying that ib_sma_get_xxx()
will clear any error status set by ib_sma_set_xxx().)
Most IB hardware seems not to allow allocation of the genuine QPNs 0
and 1, so allow for the externally-visible QPN (as constructed and
parsed by ib_packet, where used) to differ from the real
hardware-allocated QPN.
The queue key is stored as a property of the queue pair, and so can
optionally be added by the Infiniband core at the time of calling
ib_post_send(), rather than always having to be specified by the
caller.
This allows IPoIB to avoid explicitly keeping track of the data queue
key.
Now that path record lookups are handled entirely via
ib_resolve_path(), the only role of the IPoIB peer cache is as a
lookup table for MAC addresses. Update the code structure and
comments to reflect this.
The IPoIB broadcast MAC address varies according to the partition key.
Now that the broadcast MAC address is a property of the network device
rather than of the link layer, we can expose this real MAC address
directly.
The broadcast LID is now identified via a path record lookup; this is
marginally inefficient (since it was present in the MCMemberRecord
GetResponse), but avoids the need to special-case broadcasts when
constructing the address vector in ipoib_transmit().
Generalise the subnet management agent into a general management agent
capable of sending and responding to MADs, including support for
retransmissions as necessary.
Currently, all Infiniband users must create a process for polling
their completion queues (or rely on a regular hook such as
netdev_poll() in ipoib.c).
Move instead to a model whereby the Infiniband core maintains a single
process calling ib_poll_eq(), and polling the event queue triggers
polls of the applicable completion queues. (At present, the
Infiniband core simply polls all of the device's completion queues.)
Polling a completion queue will now implicitly refill all attached
receive work queues; this is analogous to the way that netdev_poll()
implicitly refills the RX ring.
Infiniband users no longer need to create a process just to poll their
completion queues and refill their receive rings.
IPoIB and the SMA have separate constants for the packet size to be
used to I/O buffer allocations. Merge these into the single
IB_MAX_PAYLOAD_SIZE constant.
(Various other points in the Infiniband stack have hard-coded
assumptions of a 2048-byte payload; we don't currently support
variable MTUs.)
IPoIB has a link-layer broadcast address that varies according to the
partition key. We currently go through several contortions to pretend
that the link-layer address is a fixed constant; by making the
broadcast address a property of the network device rather than the
link-layer protocol it will be possible to simplify IPoIB's broadcast
handling.
Move the icky call to step() from aoe.c to ata.c; this takes it at
least one step further away from where it really doesn't belong.
Unfortunately, AoE has the ugly aoe_discover() mechanism which means
that we still have a step() loop in aoe.c for now; this needs to be
replaced at some future point.
Objects typically call xfer_close() as part of their response to a
close() message. If the initiating object has already nullified the
xfer interface then this isn't a problem, but it can lead to
unexpected behaviour when the initiating object is aiming to reuse the
connection and so does not nullify the interface.
Fix by always temporarily nullifying the interface during xfer_close()
(as was already being done by xfer_vreopen() in order to work around
this specific problem).

These commands can be used to activate or deactivate the PXE API (on a
specifiable network interface).
This is currently of limited use, since most image formats will call
shutdown() before booting the image, meaning that the underlying net
device gets shut down during remove_devices() anyway.
ifcommon_exec() was long-ago marked as __attribute__((regparm(2))) in
order to minimise the size of functions that call into it. Since
then, gPXE has added -mregparm=3 as a general compilation option, and
this "optimisation" is now counter-productive.
Change (and simplify) the prototype to minimise code size given the
current compilation conditions.
pxe_init_structures() fills in the fields of the !PXE and PXENV+
structures that aren't known until gPXE starts up. Once gPXE is
started, these values will never change.
Make pxe_init_structures() an initialisation function so that PXE
users don't have to worry about calling it.
It is possible that the UNDI ISR may be triggered before netdev_tx()
returns control to pxenv_undi_transmit(). This means that
pxenv_undi_isr() may see a zero undi_tx_count, and so not check for TX
completions. This is not a significant problem, since it will check
for TX completions on the next call to pxenv_undi_isr() anyway; it
just means that the NBP will see a spurious IRQ that was apparently
caused by nothing.
Fix by updating the undi_tx_count before calling netdev_tx(), so that
pxenv_undi_isr() can decrement it and report the TX completion.
Symantec Ghost requires working multicast support. gPXE configures
all (sufficiently supported) network adapters into "receive all
multicasts" mode, which means that PXENV_UNDI_SET_MCAST_ADDRESS is
actually a no-op, but the current implementation returns
PXENV_STATUS_UNSUPPORTED instead.
Fix by making PXENV_UNDI_SET_MCAST_ADDRESS return success. For good
measure, also implement PXENV_UNDI_GET_MCAST_ADDRESS, since the
relevant functionality is now exposed by the net device core.
Note that this will silently fail if the gPXE driver for the NIC being
used fails to configure the NIC in "receive all multicasts" mode.
The PXE debugging messages have remained pretty much unaltered since
Etherboot 5.4, and are now difficult to read in comparison to most of
the rest of gPXE.
Bring the pxe_undi debug messages up to normal gPXE standards.
This keeps code size down, since the wireless interface management
commands have the same command-line interface and overall structure as
the wired commands.

With the addition of link status codes, we can now display a detailed
error indication if iflinkwait() fails.
Putting the error output in iflinkwait avoids code duplication, and
gains symmetry with the other interface management routines; ifopen()
already prints an error directly if it cannot open its interface.

The Symantec UNDI DOS driver fails when run on top of gPXE because we
return our interface type as "gPXE" rather than one of the predefined
NDIS interface type strings.
Fix by returning the standard "DIX+802.3" string; this isn't
necessarily always accurate, but it's highly unlikely that anything
trying to use the UNDI API would understand our IPoIB link-layer
pseudo-header anyway.
The Intel DOS UNDI driver fails when run on top of gPXE because we do
not fill in the ServiceFlags field in PXENV_UNDI_GET_IFACE_INFO.
Fix by filling in the ServiceFlags field with reasonable values
indicating our approximate feature capabilities.
The 3Com DOS UNDI driver fails when run on top of gPXE for two
reasons: firstly because PXENV_UNDI_SET_PACKET_FILTER is unsupported,
and secondly because gPXE enters the NBP without enabling interrupts
on the NIC, and the 3Com driver never calls PXENV_UNDI_OPEN.
Fix by always returning success from PXENV_UNDI_SET_PACKET_FILTER
(which is no worse than the current situation, since we already ignore
the receive packet filter in PXENV_UNDI_OPEN), and by forcibly
enabling interrupts on the NIC within PXENV_UNDI_TRANSMIT. The latter
is something of a hack, but avoids the need to implement a complete
base-code ISR that we would otherwise need if we were to enter the NBP
with interrupts enabled.
Commit 558c1a4 ("[tcp] Improve robustness in the presence of duplicated
received packets") introduced a regression in that an old duplicate
ACK received while in the ESTABLISHED state would pass through normal
ACK processing, including updating tcp->snd_seq.
Fix by ensuring that ACK processing ignores all duplicate ACKs.
All TCP errors or unusual events should now generate a debugging
message at DBGLVL_LOG, with enough information (SEQ and ACK numbers)
to be able to identify the corresponding packet (or missing packet) in
a network trace from the remote end.
This makes it possible to leave TCP debugging enabled in order to see
interesting TCP events, without flooding the console with at least one
message per packet.
This resolves potential difficulties occurring when more than one script
is used. Total cost: 88 bytes uncompressed.

In order to construct outgoing link-layer frames or parse incoming
ones properly, some protocols (such as 802.11) need more state than is
available in the existing variables passed to the link-layer protocol
handlers. To remedy this, add struct net_device *netdev as the first
argument to each of these functions, so that more information can be
fetched from the link layer-private part of the network device.
Updated all three call sites (netdevice.c, efi_snp.c, pxe_undi.c) and
both implementations (ethernet.c, ipoib.c) of ll_protocol to use the
new argument.

gPXE responds to duplicated ACKs with an immediate retransmission,
which can lead to a sorceror's apprentice syndrome. It also responds
to out-of-range (or old duplicate) ACKs with a RST, which can cause
valid connections to be dropped.
Fix the sorceror's apprentice syndrome by leaving the retransmission
timer running (and so inhibiting the immediate retransmission) when we
receive a potential duplicate ACK. This seems to match the behaviour
of Linux observed via wireshark traces.
Fix the RST issue by sending RST only on out-of-range ACKs that occur
before the connection is fully established, as per RFC 793.
These problems were exposed during development of the 802.11 wireless
link layer; the 802.11 protocol has a failure mode that can easily
cause duplicated packets. The fixes were tested in a controlled way
by faking large numbers of duplicated packets in the rtl8139 driver.

MAX_LL_HEADER_LEN is erroneously set to 6 rather than 14, resulting
in possible data corruption whenever we send an ARP packet.
Fix value and add a comment explaining why MAX_LL_ADDR_LEN is greater
than MAX_LL_HEADER_LEN.

Windows text editors such as Notepad tend to use CRLF line endings,
which breaks gPXE's signature detection for script images. Since
scripts are usually very small, they end up falling back to being
detected as valid PXE executable images (since there are no signature
checks for PXE executables). Executing text files as x86 machine code
tends not to work well.
Fix by allowing for any isspace() character to terminate the "#!gpxe"
signature, and by ensuring that CR characters get stripped during
command line parsing.

Several SPI chips will respond to an SPI read command with a dummy
zero bit immediately prior to the first real data bit. This can be
used to autodetect the address length, provided that the command
length and data length are already known, and that the MISO data line
is tied high.

gcc 4.4 defaults to using .cfi assembler directives for debugging
information, which causes unneeded .eh_frame sections to be generated.
These sections are already stripped out by our linker script, so don't
affect the final build, but do distort the output of "size" when run
on individual .o files; the .eh_frame size is included within the size
reported for .text. This makes it difficult to accurately judge the
effects of source code changes upon object code size.
Fix by adding -fno-dwarf2-cfi-asm to CFLAGS if we detect that this
option is supported by the gcc that we are compiling with.

If the ProxyDHCPOFFER already includes PXE options (i.e. option 60 is
set to "PXEClient" and option 43 is present) then assume that the
ProxyDHCPREQUEST can be sent to port 67, rather than port 4011. This
is a reasonable assumption, since in that case the ProxyDHCP server
has already demonstrated by responding to the DHCPDISCOVER that it is
listening on port 67. (If the ProxyDHCP server were not listening on
port 67, then the standard DHCP server would have been configured to
respond with option 60 set to "PXEClient" but no option 43 present.)
The PXE specification is ambiguous on this point; the specified
behaviour covers only the cases in which option 43 is *not* present in
the ProxyDHCPOFFER. In these cases, we will continue to send the
ProxyDHCPREQUEST to port 4011.
This change is required in order to allow us to interoperate with
dnsmasq, which listens only on port 67. (dnsmasq relies on
unspecified behaviour of the Intel PXE stack, which it seems will
retain the ProxyDHCPOFFER as an options source and never issue a
ProxyDHCPREQUEST, thereby enabling dnsmasq to omit listening on port
4011.)
IBM Tivoli PXE Server 5.1.0.3 is reported to send trailing garbage
bytes at the end of the OACK packet, which causes gPXE to reject the
packet and abort the TFTP transfer.
Work around the problem by processing as much as possible of the OACK,
and treating name/value parsing errors as non-fatal.

We currently send all boot server discovery requests to port 4011.
Section 2.2.1 of the PXE spec states that boot server discovery
packets should be "sent broadcast (port 67), multicast (port 4011), or
unicast (port 4011)". Adjust our behaviour so that any boot server
discovery packets that are sent to the broadcast address are directed
to port 67 rather than port 4011.
This is required for operation with dnsmasq as a PXE server, since
dnsmasq listens only on port 67, and relies upon this (specified)
behaviour.
This change may break some setups using the (itself very broken) Linux
PXE server from kano.org.uk. This server will, in its default
configuration, listen only on port 4011. It never constructs a boot
server list (PXE_BOOT_SERVERS, option 43.8), and uses the wrong
definitions for the discovery control bits (PXE_DISCOVERY_CONTROL,
option 43.6). The upshot is that it will always instruct the client
to perform multicast and broadcast discovery only. In setups lacking
a valid multicast route on the server side, this used to work because
gPXE would eventually give up on the (non-responsive) multicast
address and send a broadcast request to port 4011, which the Linux PXE
server would respond to. Now that gPXE correctly sends this broadcast
request to port 67 instead, it is never seen by the Linux PXE server,
and the boot fails. The fix is to either (a) set up a multicast route
correctly on the server side before starting the PXE server, or (b)
edit /etc/pxe.conf to contain the server's unicast address in the
"multicast_address" field (a hack that happens to work).

This prevents gPXE from wasting time attempting to contact a ProxyDHCP
server on port 4011 if the DHCP response already contains the relevant
PXE options. This behaviour is hinted at (though not explicitly
specified) in the PXE spec, and seems to match what the Intel client
does.

It is now possible to run e.g.
make bin/rtl8139.dsk.licence
in order to see a licensing assessment for any given gPXE build. The
assessment will either produce a single overall licence for the build
(based on combining all the licences used within the source files for
that build), or will exit with an error stating why a licence
assessment is not possible (for example, if there are files involved
that do not yet contain an explicit FILE_LICENCE() declaration).
For partly historical reasons, various files in the gPXE source tree
are licensed under different, though compatible, terms. Most of the
code is licensed under GPLv2 with the "or later" clause, but there are
exceptions such as:
The string.h file, which derives from Linux and is licensed as
Public Domain.
The EFI header files, which are taken from the EDK2 source tree and
are licensed under BSD.
The 3c90x driver, which has a custom GPL-like licence text.
Introduce a FILE_LICENCE() macro to make licensing more explicit.
This macro should be applied exactly once to each source (.c, .S or
.h) file. It will cause a corresponding zero-sized common symbol to
be added to any .o files generated from that source file (and hence to
any final gPXE binaries generated from that source file). Determining
the applicable licences to generated files can then be done using e.g.
$ objdump -t bin/process.o | grep __licence

indicating that bin/process.o is covered entirely by the GPLv2
with the "or later" clause, or

indicating that bin/rtl8139.dsk includes both code licensed under
GPLv2 (both with and without the "or later" clause) and code licensed
as Public Domain.
Determining the result of licence combinations is currently left as an
exercise for the reader.
Etherboot 5.4 erroneously treats PXENV_UNLOAD_STACK as the "final
shutdown" call, and unhooks INT15. When using gPXE's undionly.kpxe,
this results in gPXE overwriting the portion of Etherboot located in
high memory, because it is no longer hidden from the system memory map
at the time that gPXE loads.
Work around this by explicitly testing for Etherboot as the underlying
PXE stack (as is already done in undinet.c) and skipping the call to
PXENV_UNLOAD_STACK if necessary.
Commit b149a99 ([build] Round up SUBx deltas) introduced a
signed/unsigned issue that affects gPXE images built on 32-bit hosts.
The zbin fixup utility performed an unsigned division, which led to
.usb images with an incorrect number of sectors to load.
The issue snuck by on 64-bit hosts since uint32_t is promoted to long.
On 32-bit hosts it is promoted to unsigned long.

NetBSD kernels are multiboot ELF kernels with an entry point
incorrectly specified as a virtual address rather than a physical
address.
Work around this by looking for the segment that could plausibly
contain the entry point address (interpreted as either a physical or
virtual address), and using that to determine the eventual physical
entry point.
In the event of any ambiguity, precedence is given to interpretation
of the entry point as a physical address.
Solaris kernels are multiboot images with the "raw" flag set,
indicating that the loader should use the raw address fields within
the multiboot header rather than looking for an ELF header. However,
the Solaris kernel contains garbage data in the raw address fields,
and requires us to use the ELF header instead.
Work around this by always using the ELF header if present. This
renders the "raw" flag somewhat redundant.
You can now type e.g.
make bin/rtl8139.rom.sizes
in order to see the (uncompressed) sizes of all of the object files
linked in to bin/rtl8139.rom. This should make it easier to identify
relevant code bloat.
The build mechanism currently allows for multiple objects per source
file. The only remaining user of this is unnrv2b.S. Replace this
usage with a separate unnrv2b16.S wrapper file, as is currently used
for e.g. pxeprefix.S and kpxeprefix.S.
You can now type e.g.
make bin/rtl8139.rom.deps
to see a list of the source files included in the build of
bin/rtl8139.rom. This is intended to assist with copyright vetting.
Other new debugging targets include
make bin/rtl8139.rom.objs
to see a list of object files linked in to bin/rtl8139.rom, and
make bin/rtl8139.rom.nodeps
to see a list of the source files that are *not* required for the
build of bin/rtl8139.rom.
Some utilities that expect a floppy disk image (e.g. iLO?) may test
for a file of the correct size. Reinstate the .pdsk image format in
order to provide this if needed.
QEMU will silently round down a disk or ROM image file to the nearest
512 bytes. Fix by always padding .rom, .dsk and .hd images to the
nearest 512-byte boundary.

This replaces the gdbstub's polite NAK behavior with retransmission of
the current outstanding reply packet. It solves situations where gdb
and gPXE's gdbstub get out of sync due to the lack of flow control in
the gdb protocol spec.

The zbin compressor fixup utility rounds down file sizes before
calculating their difference. This produces incorrect values and may
cause truncated gPXE images to be loaded at boot.
The following example explains the problem:
ilen = 48 bytes (uncompressed input file)
olen = 17 bytes (compressed output file)
divisor = 16 bytes (paragraph granularity)
fixmeup = 3 paragraphs (value to fix up)
olen / divisor - ilen / divisor
= 1 - 3
= -2 paragraphs (old delta calculation)
( align ( olen, divisor ) - align ( ilen, divisor ) ) / divisor
= 2 - 3
= -1 paragraphs (new delta calculation)
If we perform the SUBx operation with old delta:
fixmeup + -2 = 1 paragraph gets loaded by the prefix
With the new delta:
fixmeup + -1 = 2 paragraphs get loaded by the prefix
The old delta calculation removes the last paragraph; the prefix will
load a truncated copy of gPXE into memory. We need to load 2
paragraphs since olen is 17 bytes. Loading only 1 paragraph (16
bytes) would truncate the last byte.

Using "lret $2" to return from an interrupt causes interrupts to be
disabled in the calling program, since the INT instruction will have
disabled interrupts. Instead, patch CF on the stack and use iret to
return.
Interestingly, the original PC BIOS had this bug in at least one
place.

On Mac OS X, it is necessary to build binutils manually; the system

The Mac compiler treats "#pragma pack()" as gcc's "#pragma pack(pop)",
and so dies if the pragma pack stack is empty. Adding a "#pragma
pack(1)" immediately beforehand is enough to keep the Mac compiler
happy.
The combination of "#pragma pack(1)", "#pragma pack()" won't actually
achieve anything on a Mac, but it will at least build. (With gcc, the
"#pragma pack()" overrides any previous pragmas, so is still useful.)

Some builds of the GNU assembler will treat a '/' character as a
comment delimiter. Adding "--divide" will cause it to be treated as a
division operator, as we expect. The "--divide" option is not
available in all gas versions, so apply it only conditionally.

prep_segment() can sometimes fail because an image requests memory
that is already in use by gPXE. This will happen if
e.g. undionly.kpxe is used to boot memtest86; the memtest86 image is
an old-format kernel that needs to be loaded at 9000:0000, but this
area of memory may well already be in use by the underlying PXE stack.
Add a human-friendly error message, so that the cause is more
immediately visible.
This allows gPXE to load memtest86, which is packaged as an old kernel.
Split all code that directly touches the kernel headers out into
bzimage_parse_header() and bzimage_update_header(), to reduce code
size and offset the cost of supporting older kernels.
Total cost of this feature: 11 bytes (uncompressed).
bin/embedded.o has a build dependency on bin/.embedded.list, which
gets generated automatically by the Makefile. However, if the
EMBEDDED_IMAGE list is empty, bin/.embedded.list will never be
created, and so bin/embedded.o will be rebuilt every time due to a
missing dependency.
Fix by forcing bin/.embedded.list to be created even if the list is
empty.
The pcnet32 driver mismanages its RX buffers, with the result that
packets get corrupted if more than one packet arrives between calls to
poll().

Eliminate the potential for mismatches between table names and the
table entry data type by incorporating the data type into the
definition of the table, rather than specifying it explicitly in each
table accessor method.
Intel's C compiler (icc) chokes on the zero-length arrays that we
currently use as part of the mechanism for accessing linker table
entries. Abstract away the zero-length arrays, to make a port to icc
easier.
Introduce macros such as for_each_table_entry() to simplify the common
case of iterating over all entries in a linker table.
Represent table names as #defined string constants rather than
unquoted literals; this avoids visual confusion between table names
and C variable or type names, and also allows us to force a
compilation error in the event of incorrect table names.
Some firewall devices seem to regard SYN,PSH as an invalid flag
combination and reject the packet. Fix by setting PSH only if SYN is
not set.

Allow for settings blocks to be created on demand. This allows for
constructions such as
set defaults/filename http://bootserver/bootfile
set defaults/priority 0xff
dhcp net0
chain ${filename}
which will boot from the DHCP-provided filename, or from
"http://bootserver/bootfile" if the DHCP server does not provide a
filename.
(Note that "priority" gets interpreted as a signed integer, so setting
"defaults/priority" to 0xff will cause the "defaults" settings block
to have an effective priority of -1.)
Following the example of the Linux driver, we add a check and delay to
make sure that the NIC has finished resetting before the driver issues
any additional commands.

Having a default script containing
#!gpxe
autoboot
can cause problems when entering commands to load and start a kernel
manually; the default script image will still be present when the
kernel is started and so will be treated as an initrd. It is possible
to work around this by typing "imgfree" before any other commands, but
this is counter-intuitive.
Fix by allowing the embedded image list to be empty (in which case we
just call autoboot()), and making this the default.

Search for the PXE entry points (via the !PXE or PXENV+ structures)
through all known combinations of search methods. Furthermore, if we
find a PXENV+ structure, attempt to use it to find the !PXE structure
if at all possible.
Avoid passing credentials in the iBFT that were available but not
required for login. This works around a problem in the Microsoft
iSCSI initiator, which will refuse to initiate sessions if the CHAP
password is fewer than 12 characters, even if the target ends up not
asking for CHAP authentication.
It is a programming error, not a runtime error, if we attempt to use
block ciphers with an incorrect blocksize, so use an assert() rather
than an error status return.
The various types of cryptographic algorithm are fundamentally
different, and it was probably a mistake to try to handle them via a
single common type.
pubkey_algorithm is a placeholder type for now.
The PXE 1.x spec specifies that on NBP entry or on return from INT
1Ah AX=5650h, EDX shall point to the physical address of the PXENV+
structure. The PXE 2.x spec drops this requirement, simply stating
that EDX is clobbered. Given the principle "be conservative in what
you send, liberal in what you accept", however, we should implement
this anyway.
Certain combinations of PXE stack and BIOS result in a broken INT 18
call, which will leave the system displaying a "PRESS ANY KEY TO
REBOOT" message instead of proceeding to the next boot device. On
these systems, returning via the PXE stack is the only way to continue
to the next boot device. Returning via the PXE stack works only if we
haven't already blown away the PXE base code in pxeprefix.S.
In most circumstances, we do want to blow away the PXE base code.
Base memory is a limited resource, and it is desirable to reclaim as
much as possible. When we perform an iSCSI boot, we need to place the
iBFT above the 512kB mark, because otherwise it may not be detected by
the loaded OS; this may not be possible if the PXE base code is still
occupying that memory.
Introduce a new prefix type .kkpxe which will preserve both the PXE
base code and the UNDI driver (as compared to .kpxe, which preserves
the UNDI driver but uninstalls the PXE base code). This prefix type
can be used on systems that are known to experience the specific
problem of INT 18 being broken, or in builds (such as gpxelinux.0) for
which it is particularly important to know that returning to the BIOS
will work.

COMBOOT images use INTs to issue API calls; these end up making calls
into gPXE from real mode, and so temporarily change the real-mode
stack pointer. When our COMBOOT code uses a longjmp() to implement
the various "exit COMBOOT image" API calls, this leaves the real-mode
stack pointer stuck with its temporary value, which causes problems if
we eventually try to exit out of gPXE back to the BIOS.
Fix by adding rmsetjmp() and rmlongjmp() calls (analogous to
sigsetjmp()/siglongjmp()); these save and restore the additional state
needed for real-mode calls to function correctly.
Multi-level menus via COMBOOT rely on the COMBOOT program being able
to exit and invoke a new COMBOOT program (the next menu). This works,
but rapidly (within about five iterations) runs out of space in gPXE's
internal stack, since each new image is executed in a new function
context.
Fix by allowing tail recursion between images; an image can now
specify a replacement image for itself, and image_exec() will perform
the necessary tail recursion.
The version of the GNU assembler shipped with Fedora 10
(2.18.50.0.9-8.fc10) complains about character literals in some of our
assembly code. Changing $'x' to $( 'x' ) seems to fix the problem.
Yes, the whitespace is required; using just $('x') does not work.

This patch extends the embedded image feature to allow multiple
embedded images instead of just one.
gPXE now always boots the first embedded image on startup instead of
doing the hardcoded DHCP boot (aka autoboot).

There are code paths other than PMM allocation that can result in our
changing the ROM checksum. For example, we attempt to update our
product string to incorporate the PCI bus:dev.fn number. In a system
that does not support PMM, we could therefore end up with an incorrect
checksum.
Fix by attempting to update the checksum unconditionally.
As reported by Stefan, commit 13d09e6 ("[i386] Simplify linker script
and standardise linker-defined symbol names") breaks gdb, readelf and
associated utilities.
This is caused by the .stack section overwriting a block in the middle
of the .debug_info section (despite being included in the
.bss.textdata section in the output file, which apparently has the
correct attributes for a .bss section).
Fixed by adding explicit flags and type to the stack section
declaration.
The documentation in xfer.h and xfer.c does not say that the metadata
parameter is optional in calls such as xfer_deliver_iob_meta() and the
deliver_iob() method. However, some code in net/ is prepared to
accept a NULL pointer, and xfer_deliver_as_iob() passes a NULL pointer
directly to the deliver_iob() method.
Fix this mess of conflicting assumptions by making everything assume
that the metadata parameter is mandatory, and fixing
xfer_deliver_as_iob() to pass in a dummy metadata structure (as is
already done in xfer_deliver_iob()).
If it happens that _textdata_memsz ends up being an exact multiple of
4kB, then this will cause the .textdata section (after relocation) to
start on a page boundary. This means that the hidden memory region
(which is rounded down to the nearest page boundary) will start
exactly at virtual address 0, i.e. UNULL. This means that
init_eheap() will erroneously assume that it has failed to allocate a
an external heap, since it typically ends up choosing the area that
lies immediately below .textdata, which in this case will be the
region with top==UNULL.
A subsequent error is that memtop_urealloc() passes through the error
return status -ENOMEM to the caller, which (rightly) assumes that the
result represents a valid userptr_t address.
Fixed by using alternative tests for heap non-existence, and by
returning UNULL in case of an error from init_eheap().
fetchf_uristring() was failing to handle error values from
fetch_setting(), resulting in its attempting to allocate extremely
large temporary buffers on the stack (and so overrunning the stack and
locking up the machine).

The PXE spec dictates the rather ugly feature that we have to present
a DHCP-specified prompt string to the user, then wait to see if they
press F8 before displaying the menu.
This seems to me to be a significant retrograde step from the current
situation of displaying the menu with the timeout counting down
against the default selected boot option, but apparently the lack of
the "Press F8" prompt causes some confusion.
Various combinations of options 43.6, 43.7 and 43.8 dictate which
servers we send Boot Server Discovery requests to, and which servers
we should accept responses from. Obey these options, and remove the
explicit specification of a single Boot Server from start_pxebs() and
dependent functions.
There are many functions that take ownership of the I/O buffer they
are passed as a parameter. The caller should not retain a pointer to
the I/O buffer. Use iob_disown() to automatically nullify the
caller's pointer, e.g.:
xfer_deliver_iob ( xfer, iob_disown ( iobuf ) );
This will ensure that iobuf is set to NULL for any code after the call
to xfer_deliver_iob().
iob_disown() is currently used only in places where it simplifies the
code, by avoiding an extra line explicitly setting the I/O buffer
pointer to NULL. It should ideally be used with each call to any
function that takes ownership of an I/O buffer. (The SSA
optimisations will ensure that use of iob_disown() gets optimised away
in cases where the caller makes no further use of the I/O buffer
pointer anyway.)
If gcc ever introduces an __attribute__((free)), indicating that use
of a function argument after a function call should generate a
warning, then we should use this to identify all applicable function
call sites, and add iob_disown() as necessary.
A TFTP DATA packet with a block number of zero (representing a
negative offset within the file) could potentially cause problems.
Fixed by explicitly rejecting such packets.

The DHCP client code now implements only the mechanism of the DHCP and
PXE Boot Server protocols. Boot Server Discovery can be initiated
manually using the "pxebs" command. The menuing code is separated out
into a user-level function on a par with boot_root_path(), and is
entered in preference to a normal filename boot if the DHCP vendor
class is "PXEClient" and the PXE boot menu option exists.
Automatically unregister any settings with the same name (and position
within the settings tree) as a newly registered settings block.
This functionality is generalised out from dhcp.c.
Some targets send a spurious CHECK CONDITION message in response to
the first SCSI command. We issue (and ignore the status of) an
arbitary harmless SCSI command (a READ CAPACITY (10)) in order to draw
out this response.
The Solaris Comstar target seems to send more than one spurious CHECK
CONDITION response. Attempt up to SCSI_MAX_DUMMY_READ_CAP dummy READ
CAPACITY (10) commands before assuming that error responses are
meaningful.

Try to qualify relative names in the DNS resolver using the DHCP Domain
Name. For example:
DHCP Domain Name: etherboot.org
(Relative) Name: www
yields:
www.etherboot.org
Only names with no dots ('.') will be modified. A name with one or more
dots is unchanged.
pxe_tftp.c assumes that the first seek on its data-transfer interface
represents the block size. Apart from being an ugly hack, this will
also screw up file size calculation for files smaller than one block.
The proper solution would be to extend the data-transfer interface to
support the reporting of stat()-like data. This is not going to
happen until the cost of adding interface methods is reduced (a fix I
have planned since June 2008).
In the meantime, abuse the xfer_window() method to return the block
size, since it is not being used for anything else and is vaguely
justifiable.
Astonishingly, having returned the incorrect TFTP blocksize via
PXENV_TFTP_OPEN for almost a year seems not to have affected any of
the test cases run during that time; this bug was found only when
someone tried running the heavily-patched version of pxegrub found in
OpenSolaris.
PXE dictates a mechanism for boot menuing, involving prompting the
user with a variable message, waiting for a predefined keypress,
displaying a boot menu, and waiting for a selection.
This breaks the currently desirable abstraction that DHCP is a process
that can happen in the background without any user interaction.
F8 is represented by the ANSI escape sequence "^[[19~", which is not
representable as a KEY_xxx constant using the current encoding scheme.
Adapt the encoding scheme to allow F8 to be represented, since PXE
requires that we may need to prompt the user to press F8.
Remove the lazy assumption that ProxyDHCP == "DHCP with option 60 set
to PXEClient", and explicitly separate the notion of ProxyDHCP from
the notion of packets containing PXE options.
It is possible to configure a DHCP server to hand out PXE options
without a ProxyDHCP server present. This requires setting option 60
to "PXEClient", which will cause gPXE to attempt ProxyDHCP.
We assume in several places that dhcp->proxydhcpack is set to the
DHCPACK packet containing option 60 set to "PXEClient". When we
transition into ProxyDHCPREQUEST, set dhcp->proxydhcpack=dhcp->dhcpack
so that this assumption holds true.
We ought to rename several references to "proxydhcp" to something more
accurate, such as "pxedhcp". Treating a single DHCP response as
potentially both DHCPOFFER and ProxyDHCPOFFER does make the code
smaller, but the variable names get confusing.
Pick out the first boot menu item from the boot menu (option 43.9) and
pass it to the boot server as the boot menu item (option 43.71).
Also improve DHCP debug messages to include more details of the
packets being transmitted.
